Is excessive pitch watering necessary.?

i would think that the amount of water that can be sprinkled at half time would be minimal and that it would only make the surface very slippery. Maybe looking for the odd foul in the penalty area .Or is it so the dry hard ground doesnt cause any injury.but as you say both teams have to play on the same surface so can you really gain an advantage .
