How meiosis contributes to genetic variation, while mitosis does not?

Meiosis only happens during in reproduction and ultimately creates four daughter cells all with half the genetic content they need. For example if a womans cell is programmed to produce her eggs used in reproduction she would produce four from her orignal parent cell. All her eggs would have 23 of her chromosomes ready to be united with another 23 which would have occured during meiosis in a male creating sperm.
