I am trying to use a mouse on my advent laptop but it refuses to use it.. any ideas? no disc with mouse!?

its an optical mouse, and mice have worked previously with this lappy but not any more. i just need to know what on to press! mouse didnt come with a disc, to be fair i think its supposed to be plug n play,but its not playing! lol. help?!
