There is a long-running joke that most people enlist in the military because they are poor...?

uneducated, or without other options. If so, why do we hold them up on a pedestal saying they are giving their lives for their country? If some joined because there was nothing else to do this is not the same thing as signing up out of love of country. Which one is it - joining out of love or out of desperation?
